Treatment Issues
If the alcohol dependence is treated as the primary disorder, the purging anorexia
is often ignored. Typically, the purging anorexia becomes a life-threatening treatment
focus, with the alcohol dependence seen as a secondary problem, treated only through
detoxification.
As the above illustration shows, the present state of treatment
typically leads to a relapse of both disorders. The same
is true if alcohol dependence is treated as primary and the
purging anorexia is ignored. It is clear that a more supportive
type of treatment that addresses both problems is necessary.
