Alcohol Dependence and Purging Anorexia in Women
The summary of the symptoms and accompanying affect of alcohol dependence
in women and purging anorexia in women are stunningly similar.
- Internalized feelings
- High levels of guilt, shame, and self-blame
- Low self-esteem, low self-worth
- Self-medicating, or self-treating of negative emotions
- Self-perpetuating addictive cycles
For many women, it appears that food restriction and binging/purging behaviors
often co-occur with the beginnings of alcohol abuse as a further attempt to control
or self-medicate their negative feelings. As these behaviors continue, the cycle
progresses into one of purging anorexia and alcohol dependence.
As this illustration shows, the co-occurring disorders
of purging anorexia and alcohol dependence merge into
a potentially deadly cycle of addictive behaviors.
