Fall and winter months mark start of Seasonal Affective Disorder

Why does SAD develop?

So, how does one get SAD? The strongest theory concerns melatonin. Melatonin is secreted at night, which keeps the individual asleep. During the daytime hours, melatonin decreases substantially. Sunlight is believed to decrease the secretion of melatonin. In the cloudy winter months, the individual is not receiving enough sunlight, therefore bright light therapy is prescribed and has been found to be an effective treatment.

Researchers in sleep clinics have found high concentrations of melatonin in the blood of clients during the nighttime and early morning hours. During the daylight hours, the control groups had decreases in melatonin in their blood; however, the SAD group had high concentrations of melatonin. After the SAD group used light therapy, their melatonin levels decreased.
